Parker William Stockdale was born in Monroe county, Mo., June 26, 1872, the son of Eli Allen and Martha Elizabeth Carter Stockdale. He joined the Baptist church and was baptized at the age of fourteen years. At nineteen year of age he was licensed to preach and in a short time was ordained a minister of the Baptist church. He preached at the Baptist church in Shelbina for a short time while he was yet a student, and showed at that time promise of becoming a strong preacher.
August 21, 1895, he was married to Miss Priscilla Maddox, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Maddox of near Maud. To them were born five children, Rider, now about twelve years of age, Pope, who died in infancy, Francis Elizabeth, Laura Deane and little Billy. These little children, his heart-broken wife, his mother, sister, wife of Rev. O. P. Joyce of Kansas City and brothers, Carter A. of Kansas City and Homer E. of Lamar, Mo., and a host of other relatives and friends mourn his loss.
In 1906 Mr. Stockdale united with the Christian church and was for several years pastor of the church of that denomination at Independence, Mo. A year or two ago he was called to the Jackson Boulevard Christian church in Chicago, of which he was pastor at the time of his death, Feb. 10, 1909.
Death followed an operation for appendicitis, performed about two weeks ago. Rev. Stockdale was a young man, not yet thirty-seven years of age and, to us who cannot understand why it should be so, seems to have cut down in the zenith of his power, when he yet had much to perform and while he was yet in the midst of his great work. Yet, he has accomplished much. In his short life he has done as much as many who have lived their three score and ten years.
Revs. George Campbell and O. F. Jordan, pastors of the Christian churches in Chicago, attended the service held at the Christian church here Monday afternoon and testified to the high regard in which the deceased was held by all classes of men. Rev. J. H. Wood, pastor of the church here, also assisted in the services. The I.O.O.F. lodge had charge of the burial service.
