One of the Oldest Residents of Hannibal Passed Away Yesterday

Capt Prosper Gillett, one of the oldest residents of Hannibal, died at 6:15 o’clock yesterday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs B.F. Fields, on Grace Street, aged 84 years, 4 months and 15 days. Deceased had been in bad health for several months, and his death was not unexpected, as he was growing more feeble every day.
Capt Gillett was born in New York state, and came to Missouri in the year 1859. Shortly after coming to Hannibal he performed the duties of conductor on the old Hannibal and St Joseph railroad for a number of years. Later he followed railroad building as a means of livelihood.

He saw Hannibal grow from a village to a city of 18,000 people, and laid great faith in the future of the Bluff City.

To mourn his death he leaves three daughters- Mrs Fields, of Hannibal, Mrs Ella Taylor, of Chicago, and Mrs Henry Elliot, of Burlington also two sisters, one residing in Benton Harbor, MI and the other in Anoka, Minn
