Union Civil War veteran. Selfridge enlisted as a private in Company K of the 6th Regiment Minnesota Volunteer Infantry on August 14, 1862 and mustered out as a corporal on August 19, 1865. AFter the war he moved to Oregon where he worked as a carpenter. His family lived in the Mohawk district of Lane County. He was a member of the G.A.R.
The 6th Minnesota was initially assigned to frontier duty in the Dakota Territory under the command of Gen. Henry Sibley. There it fought against the Sioux in the Battles of Wood Lake and Stoney Lake.
Reassigned to the 16th Army Corps under the command of Gen. Canby, the 6th Minnesota fought Confederate forces in Alabama. The 6th participated in the siege of Spanish Fort and the capture of Fort Blakely. The 6th Minnesota lost 177 men during it’s service.
